JAJAH’s primary service, JAJAH Web, takes an approach called web-activated telephony, using VoIP to connect traditional phone lines (land or mobile). Founded by Austrians Roman Scharf and Daniel Mattes in 2005, JAJAH headquarters are located in Mountain View, California and Luxembourg. JAJAH also maintains a development center in Israel.
Unlike other companies that are trying to replace the phone with the computer, JAJAH believes that phones are great the way they are. “Phones work. People are not interested in headsets, downloads or hotspots. They simply want to make a call. And we completely agrees.”
Installation and Interface
JAHJAH is not a PC-to-PC VoIP service. Instead, users connect using the PC, but the user is connected through the telephone. This is how it works: Register at the JAJAH site, insert your phone number into the JAJAH interface at the JAJAH Web site, insert a friend’s phone number into that same dashboard, press the green call button and your phone rings. You pick up, and your friend’s phone rings. Wait for a reply to talk. No download, no installation.
This service is especially useful for individuals who don’t want to be tethered to their computers for long phone calls. The plan applies to landline and mobile calls to and within the United States, Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore; and it applies to landline calls to and within Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, the UK, Germany, France, Italy and most other European nations. It applies when both call participants are registered JAJAH users. In countries where free phone calls are not available, or if someone is calling a non-JAJAH member, calls are simply subject to JAJAH’s low rates.
Features
In its latest development in November 2007, JAJAH launched the JAJAH Direct service, which enables users to make long-distance or international calls by dialing a local number from any phone. JAJAH Mobile is a transparent way to make JAJAH calls from a cell phone if the phone is a Symbian. Otherwise, users can download a Java application to make calls from a mobile phone.
Other features include the ability to send SMS/text messages directly from a desktop, schedule calls well in advance, hold conference calls and use a JAJAH button. Just place the JAJAH Button on your website, your blog, your ongoing auction or your e-mail signature, and it allows people in your online network to call you while you keep your phone number private.
Performance
According to CNET Reviews, users have had mixed success with JAJAH. Additionally, if you’re on the road and you want to change your registered numbers, you will need to contact JAJAH support to do it for you. On the other hand, if you’re not ready to surrender your landline, JAJAH provides an inexpensive and easy way to make long-distance calls, especially if you use a broadband connection.
Service and Support
Few reviews on JAJAH’s support system were found, other than the support team was responsive. The Web site holds FAQs, instructional information, a forum, and the ability to contact JAJAH directly through form mail. If you are a Jajah user without a registered email address (because you have only used Jajah Direct so far, for example), you can dial a local number to receive your full login information.
